Some Quranic beliefs play a pivotal role in encouraging people to have discipline regarding their emotions. In fact, these beliefs and teachings can be the basis for forming a system of emotional discipline.

One of these teachings, for example, is about the fact that you expect an outcome from a phenomenon but in fact the opposite might happen. The Quran says in Verse 216 of Surah Al-Baqarah: “You may not like something which, in fact, is for your good and something that you may love, in fact, may be evil. God knows, but you do not know.”

This verse teaches us to abandon any kind of dogmatic opinion or desire, and gives us an expanded view and tolerance to deal with ideas that contradict our views and to accept difficulties on the way to achieving what we want. Such an ability gives us a special calm and peace of mind and makes it easy for us to control our emotions.

Also, the understanding that everything is in God’s control and depends on His will, gives us calm and peace. Referring to the story of Prophet Lut (AS), the Quran says in Verse 33 of Surah Al-Ankabut: “And when Our Messengers came to Lut, he was troubled and distressed on their account. But they said: ‘Have no fear, and do not be sad. Surely, we will save you and your family …” The angels sent by God tell Lot (AS) that he should not be troubled or fearful.

This verse clearly shows that there is no helper other than God and those who do not believe this are constantly in fear, worry and anger because of what happens in life. Only when he submits to God and seeks help from Him to strive for his objectives will calm and peace return to him.
